Cataract Surgery

As a person ages, the body undergoes certain changes that will fundamentally alter the body’s function, physical appearance, or both. Cataracts are one such example of a condition that is developed over time that can physically alter how the patient sees, as well as pose certain limitations on the patient’s ability to see clearly. Dr. Sherman of the Manhattan Ophthalmology Associates in Manhattan, New York and his team of experts will help educate you about cataract surgery, and walk you through the process from beginning to end so that you can be confident that you are in safe and expert hands all the way.

Essentially, cataract surgery is the removal of the lens of the eye after it has developed cataracts or an opacification of the lens of the eye causing it to lose clarity, impairing the patient’s ability to see and could even lead to loss of vision. In cataract surgery, the patient’s natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens that is specifically designed to have a specific prescription that will facilitate the restoration of the patient’s functional vision and acuity.

Depending on the results of a preoperative assessment, Dr. Sherman will be able to put a specific action plan into place, ensuring that all of your needs will be addressed during surgery and that the best results will be achieved. During the surgery, local anesthesia will be given to eliminate discomfort, and then following the insertion of a speculum to keep the eyelids open, small strategic incisions will be made on the cornea to facilitate the delivery of high-frequency ultrasonic waves to the cataract in order to dissolve it. The resulting fragments will be aspirated with a titanium-tipped aspirating probe. When all the fragments have been cleared, the intraocular lens that was specifically chosen to meet your needs will be implanted into the eye, effectively taking the place of a natural lens that was removed-no sutures are used. Post-operative care regimens will then be developed to make sure that recovery is fast and complication free. With premium intraocular lens implants there will be no need for eyeglasses because distance and near vision will be corrected.
